Situation

Historically, weather has been modeled by taking a variety of variables into account at a single point in time and propagating them based upon empirical fluid dynamic correlations. These models have improved over time through the addition of resolution (data points) and computing power. However, these models only take into account the current variables and do not leverage historical data. Although billions of dollars are funneled into government agencies (NOAA, ECWMF, etc) toward this end, small teams using AI have demonstrated results much more accurate using historical weather and satellite imagery in predicting weather behavior.

Complication

Because the weather models are heavily funded and improving with time, there is a reluctance to deviate from the known. However, these models are inflexible with respect to objective function and are only truly useful in predicting temperature and precipitation. By better predicting renewable energy variables like solar irradiance and wind speed, significant gains in dispatch efficiency can be achieved.
