Mark Bly

In his most recent position at BP, Mark was Executive Vice President, Safety and Operational Risk, where he established and led the global organization to drive improvements in safety and reliability in all BP operating units – one of the key strategic responses by BP’s CEO after the 2010 Gulf of Mexico incident. Mark led the internal investigation into the 2010 Deep Water Horizon incident and authored the “Bly” report that defined industry understanding of the event and set the foundation for BP’s new global drilling organization and its operating ethos and practices. The result of his team’s efforts drove personal injuries down 40% and key process safety incident measures by 30-40% (FY12 vs. FY10), with improvements continuing as we speak. As a member of the Executive Team, he worked closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors.

Previously, Mark was Group Vice President, Exploration & Production at BP, a member of the Executive Team with responsibility for key growth hubs with over 800 MBOED of production and over $4 billion of capital investment. Mark led key E&P units in Alaska, North Sea, and North America onshore to oversee a global portfolio of over 800 MBOED that included Angola, Trinidad, Egypt, Algeria and the Gulf of Mexico.

In the mid 2000’s, Mark was Strategic Performance Unit Leader, North American Gas, USA, where he delivered substantial reserve adds and strong operational results, being responsible for all aspects of an organization with operations in 7 U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces, 2500 employees, 4000 contractors, and investing ~$2 billion capital annually. In the late 90’s and early 2000’s he led business units, with full P&L accountability in Alaska and the North Sea. Earlier in his BP career, Mark held various engineering, project management, commercial and planning roles with increasing scope and responsibility.

Mark received his M.S. Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and his B.S. Civil Engineering from the University of California, Davis.
